We have had great news that Major is now ready to meet his potential new family having been moved to a large RSPCA branch where he was supported by their qualified behaviourist .

This stunning chap came into our care a number of weeks ago. He is 2 years old and unfortunately he had never really been on a walk, met people or been socialised with other dogs which has resulted in him being very strong on the lead. Everything is so new and exciting to him; he will lunge forwards, to the left,  backwards or to the right with no warning at all. As we have already said, he is powerfully strong! He  has improved from how he was but it is still a considerable issue.

When he joined us he also had an absolutely terrible flea allergy which has now fully cleared.

Day by day, as Major has felt better so has his enthusiasm for life grown. His enthusiasm combined with his strength and power must be taken into consideration before applying to adopt him, an experienced home will be needed.

Major is a happy dog who loves playing fetch. Again, unfortunately, his recall isn’t very good and he will run at 100miles an hour to anything that distracts him. This can be intimidating to people he encounters.

He has shown NO aggression whatsoever but does bark and lunge towards things that intimidate him. This is also getting better as he begins to realise it’s just the normal world.

Major has lived with primary age children but we would not consider applications for a home with children under 10 years of age due to him being such a big, bouncy and strong dog.

Beyond his faults which are all improving, Major is a beautiful, stunning and affectionate chap. He’s super happy and desperately wants to please.
He’s house trained and seems to have outgrown the chewing stage

Ideally, we are looking for an active home, where he can burn off his energy whist learning how to respond appropriately to new things. We would also like to find him a home where he won’t be left for long periods.

Several visits prior to adoption are advised. An adoption fee applies.

If you are interested in applying to adopt Major please first read our adoption policy which can be found on this website before completing the perfect match form that can be downloaded Here and returned via email to: nicki@rspca-tameside-glossop.org.uk

Dog Adoption FAQs

  1. Can I come and visit the dogs? We don’t have a ‘walk around’ centre so you will need to call or email us to let us know which dog you are interested in. Find the contact details for adoption on the right of this page.
  2. I’ve seen the dog I want, what next? Have a read of our adoption process for useful information and to make sure adopting a branch animal is right for you. Then get in touch to arrange to meet the dog you are interested in
  3. What is the adoption fee? The cost for adoption is from £275 for adult dogs and from £450 for puppies under 12 months of age, see the table above for what this includes.
  4. Where do you keep the dogs in branch care? Some dogs are fostered in various homes around Tameside and Glossop and others are in private boarding kennels.
  5. Can I make a financial donation to help branch dogs? Yes, you can donate directly to the branch by cheque or postal order, please send an email and we will gladly send you the correct address to send this type of donation to, or by cash at one of our collection days.

Good to know…

The branch will not rehome dogs to households where other resident dogs have not been neutered or are not up to date with vaccinations unless there are veterinary reasons for this.

We will not rehome RSPCA dogs as guard dogs, thieves these days won’t hesitate to hurt a dog – please get a good burglar alarm instead.

We will not allow our dogs to go to homes where they will live outside, as there is nothing so upsetting than to see a dog without human interaction, spending their days on the end of a chain or in a lonely kennel.

Unfortunately the branch cannot accept Bull breeds and their crosses directly from members of the public, only via RSPCA inspectors.
